Contraindications to Exercise
Contraindications to Exercise
Younger
(5-12 years)
Training at too
high level of intensity and for long duration [greater than 30 minutes].
Training in hotter and more humid
environments as thermo regulatory mechanisms in the child’s body are not fully
developed.
Sports injuries to the long bones
(epiphyseal plates), low back (L4,5), and muscle injuries are problematic in
this group.
Children have a lower tolerance to the
demands of exercise. Strength training
routines should reflect teaching of basic lifting techniques and not
lifting-heavy weights. Beginners should
be made to understand the basics of exercise, such as heart rate monitoring,
proper body alignment, benefits of warm-up, etc. Perhaps the instructor should devote half of
their program experience to education and demonstration.

Clinical Study for Child Growth
Why Clinical Studies are Important
Clinical research in children helps us to treat our children like children, rather than little adults by:- Finding the best dose of medicines to prevent harmful effects or under-treatment.
- Making chewables, liquids or tablets that are easier for children to take, yet still safe.
- Finding treatments for problems that occur only in children, like prematurity.
- Finding treatments for diseases or conditions that occur in both children and adults but which can act differently in children and adults, like arthritis or heart disease.
- Finding treatments for new or existing diseases to improve the health of children in the future, like vaccine studies that were done years ago help children stay healthier today.
- Understanding how medicines affect children's brains and bodies as they grow and develop.
Stages of Growth
Children are growing. They are changing and maturing all the time. An 8-month-old is completely different from an 8-year-old, who is completely different from an 18-year-old...so even among children, everyone is different. And at each of the stages of growth below, children may need different doses of medicine, different sizes of devices or different types of therapy.References:

Intensity and Hot Weather Precaution
Intensity and Hot Weather Precaution when incorporating an exercise plan for kids:
Keep in mind the physiological factors influencing children exercising during hot weather. Monitor temperature and humidity and adjust activities.
Children have:
a. Higher surface area/mass ratio.
b. Greater amount of heat transfer between the body and the environment.
c. Greater metabolic heat production than adults performing the same activity.
d. Less sweating capacity than adults.
e. Decreased ability to rid the body of heat due to lower cardiac output.

Training Principles for Children's
![]() |
| NEERAJ MEHTA |
The following
recommendations should be modified according to the individual needs of the
child. Because children are not able to
give legal consent, parents must sign permission or consent from before
children are allowed to participate in classes.
Frequency
Youth aerobic
activities should be performed 2-3 times per week to create a training
effect. However, as will all forms of
cardio-respiratory conditioning, the response in children varies.
Duration
Attention span and
physical capacity of children vary depending on age and developmental
stage. It is important for instructors
to establish the amount of time appropriate for the chronological age and
developmental level of the participants.
For youth, duration of activity may be more beneficial than intensity,
due to varied developmental stages of maturation. A longer, less intense program allows for
greater attention span with less physiological stress and provides positive
health and social benefits.
Intensity
Any activity should represent the normal
bell curve of heart rates. Intensity
varies depending on activity. Adult
standards may be used to monitor exercise intensity, but is more appropriate to
calculate 200 bpm minus age vs.220 bpm minus age for estimated heart rate. The RPE scale should also be modified for
youth fitness programs so it is easier to understand.
For an aerobics class, exercise
selection, elevated movement, movement patterns and sequencing, speed and lever
length are important in regulating the exercise intensity.
Aerobic activities can range from fun
group play, obstacle courses, organized recreational sports and games,
individual and team sports to dance activities and step and slide for
kids. Activities will vary on the age
and skill level of the children.

Environmental Safety for Kids Workout
Environmental Safety
An instructor or another responsible adult should supervise children at all times.
When you are working with very young children, you should see that windows and storage cabinets are locked to prevent accidents and electrical outlets are covered. Floors should be padded or floor mats should be used.
The activity room should be free of sharp or obstructive objects. Exercise in moderate temperatures with low humidity. Equipment for children should be designed for age-specific groups according to size, material, weight, height and safety regulations. Equipment for children should be fun, safe, quick and easy to store. Young children love to use props such as balls, balloons, hula-hoops, feathers, hats, gloves and costumes. Use your imagination. Give children the option to choose what they enjoy.
Creating homemade equipment (such as beanbags made from scraps of material or weights made from plastic bottles filled with water), can be fun projects for children to create.

Children Fitness Program Design
Children Fitness Program Design and Injury PreventionMake sure medical clearance has been obtained.
Determine the appropriate level of participation.
Insure appropriate shoes are worn.
Instruct children how to breathe properly during exercises.
Give class orientation, describe the day’s activities and teach a healthy message.
Have children hydrate before, during and after exercise.
Today’s youth are becoming more sedentary, leaving them at a greater risk for cardiovascular disease. Increasing their level of physical activity is very important and is the main focus of the 21st century. Fitness professional working with children should try to focus on the following:
AGES 2-5
Focus on developing body awareness and response to movement stimuli using music, sounds and equipment to help develop lateral movement skills, body control eye-hand coordination and body image.
Develop spatial awareness, visual perception and fundamental motor skills, (e.g., catching, falling, running, hoping, skipping, etc.). Activities may be incorporated into fun obstacle courses, with colorful equipment and creative play set to music.
Cognitive learning may be developed through the use of specific body parts, shapes and colors.
Fantasy or make-believe games encourage children to explore movement patterns in a continuous, creative manner.
Children move with intermittent bursts of energy. Classes should be well supervised, yet loosely structured and designed to follow children’s natural energy patterns.
AGES 6-8
Focus on increased body awareness, rhythm and coordination, music, memory.
Further development of motor skills and hand-eye coordination. A circuit format is ideal for this age group since attention span is short.
Include a variety of exercise stations to challenge the individual and isolate different body parts.
Encourage activities, which include multi-impact movement combinations to help develop rhythm and muscle memory. Cooperative games are educational, too.
This age group can benefit from more complex obstacle courses, which incorporate the use of large muscles, locomotive skill, visual perception, spatial awareness.
Cognitive and motor functions.
Introduce participants to basic sports skills.
Introduce kid’s step and slide programs.
AGES 9-11
Design a program to increase physical skills. Combine movement sequence,
Stress cardiovascular conditioning, muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, agility and balance.
Include cooperative games, which enhance social skills and group play (sportsmanship).
Introduce fun, low-Impact aerobic dance. Instructors may also choose to introduce kid’s step and slide aerobic programs.
AGES 12-17
Stress the components of physical fitness.
Circuits and advanced obstacle courses are appropriate.
Individual and team sports will interest this age group. Instructors may focus on developing sports skills.
Introduce more challenging movement patterns for low-impact aerobic dance.
Include a progressive strength-training program.
Gradually increase intensity and duration of aerobic portion of class until minimum adult standards are met.
For older students, instructors may choose to focus on advanced sports skills and strategies. Instruction on aerobic dance exercise, funk step and slide may be incorporate into a program designed for this age group.

Kids vs Physical Activity
Kids vs Physical Activity

Lot of people have myths about, Kids vs Physical Activity : It not only helps develop muscles and fend off obesity, it also offers opportunities to socialize and learn new skills. 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous activity every day to grow up to a healthy weight in kids. Physical activity also help improve a child’s academic performance. New research finds that physical fitness can enhance learning and memory in children. In their studies, investigators from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign found that aerobic capacity or level of fitness was particularly linked to improvements in learning a challenging task. Fitness levels can influence learning differently when the study method used is more challenging, and that with the increased aerobic fitness, can benefit learning and memory in school-age children. Reducing or eliminating physical education in schools.
Immediate Benefits
• Improved ability to meet the demands of daily physical activity
• Improved result in physical performance tests
• Improved motor skills
• Reduced injuries.
• Fewer chronic health conditions and a lower risk for developing chronic health problems than sedentary children introducing fitness for preschool years.

Tips for healthy Diet for Kids
| Kids Training Session with Neeraj Mehta |
Tips for healthy Diet for Kids:
Fill Up With Fiber
Few kids crave a fiber-rich meal. But fiber is filling and when combined with drinking plenty of water, helps prevent constipation. A high-fiber food has 5 grams or more of fiber per serving and a “good” source of fiber is one that provides 2.5 to 4.9 grams per serving. Some fiber-friendly foods include cooked navy beans (9.6 grams of fiber for ½ cup), a medium baked sweet potato with skin (3.8 grams) and bran flakes (5.3 grams).
Control the Supply lines
You decide which foods to buy and when to serve them. Though kids will pester their parents for less nutritious foods, adults should be in charge when deciding which foods are regularly stocked in the house. Kids won't go hungry. They'll eat what's available in the cupboard and fridge at home. If their favourite snack isn't all that nutritious, you can still buy it once in a while so they don't feel deprived.
Carbohydrates should be the best quality possible
Children should be eating low GI carbohydrates where possible such as grain bread and wholegrain breakfast cereals such as oats. Remember, it is not that children do not "like" grain bread; it is just that they may prefer something else. Long term studies have shown that weight control is supported by low GI eating patterns.
The TV needs to be switched off
Numerous studies have shown that increased screen time (television, computer, video games) is associated with obesity so aim for no more than two hours of screen time each day. Ways to limit TV watching at home include:
• Have clear rules in relation to TV such as no TV in the morning
• Two to three TV-free days each week
• Encourage your children to play more
Do As I Do
Be a role model and teach your kids to make balanced choices when eating out. Add a green salad to your order and request low-fat or light dressing; choose mustard instead of mayonnaise on sandwiches; opt for stir-fried or steamed dishes rather than fried.
