Physical fitness is losing ground among children to video games, TV, studies and sedentary lifestyle. Child obesity and musculoskeletal development disorders by the age of 14 years is becoming a common sight in India.
Probably making physical education and routine exercise regime, a part of the curriculum could help address this problem. Least that can be done is, parents encouraging children to make physical activity a part of their every day life.

Anybody can exercise

Zumba  and Kick boxing is starting from 5th September.
Call on +919811309667 for enrollment

Daily exercise is the key to a healthy body, mind and soul. It will make you feel better, and open up a whole new way of life for you. It has been proven that exercise is a form of preventive medicine.
Today, virtually every form of medical science recognises these basic truths:
Simple exercise can have profound healing effects.
Specific “physical activities” can help fight illness and enhance health.
It helps you improve your mood.
It keeps your energy level up.
Exercise is a holistic approach to maintain overall health.
Being a fitness therapist, I have come across many people who think that they cannot exercise.
They give me endless lists of reasons (I am not including “I don’t have time” — this is not a reason, just an excuse) and most of their reasons are pure myths.

Myth 1 — My knee hurts
People, especially seniors, fear that some exercises like squats or lunges will harm their knees.
If your joints feel strained or pained after any sort of movement, that means you are not doing it right.
Another fact is that squats are very effective in strengthening your knee joints, provided you do them right.

Myth 2 — My blood pressure will go up if I walk on the treadmill
Low impact cardio activities such as walking really have positive effects on your blood pressure.
Walking on a regular basis will help you in regulating your blood pressure. Ask your doctor, I am sure you will get the same advice.

Myth 3 — My child is too young to work out; it will interrupt his/her growth
Children can start working out as early as they can start walking and handle their routine stuff.
Involving them in a few physical activities will be one of the best habits you can inculcate in them.
Quite contrary to the popular myth, exercising is really beneficial for growing children.

Are you killing your child's immunity?

Are you killing your child's immunity?
The school is not the only one to be blamed here. When was the last time you didn't allow your child go out to play because it was too sunny? Or stopped him/her from a rain bath, afraid that they will catch a chill? It was as recent as yesterday - wasn't it? Says Neeraj Mehta, Delhi-based alternative medicine and human biomechanics expert:
'Children who have been raised in an antiseptic/anti bacterial environment, fail to develop the immunity to combat seasonal changes and common ailments such as fevers, colds and asthma.'.

Summer fun

Summer holidays are a challenging time for parents. Kids want to have fun but parents want them to be engaged in healthy activities. One way is for parents to spend more time with the kids and help them learn new things while having fun. There are other ways too. Some tips:
Work on working out: Use the vacation to work on your child’s fitness level. Exercising regularly improves brain function. The best way would be for the parents to involve the child in his/her exercise routine and work out together. If you’re sending them to a fitness facility make sure that they are being supervised by a certified fitness instructor.
Read away: If your kid is not a reader, start inculcating the reading habit this summer. Get involved with their reading. Take them to your local library and help them choose appropriate books. Make a habit of a shared reading at bedtime or any other set time. Work out book-related fun activities with the kids.

Study

Mental Attitude: Anger and Anxiety Increase Heart Attack Risk.

An analysis of more than 300 heart attack patients indicates that intense anger or anxiety dramatically increases an individual's risk for a myocardial infarction in the hours immediately following such an occurrence. More specifically, in the 120 minutes following a bout of intense anger, a person's risk for a heart attack increases by 8.5 times and an extreme anxiety episode elevates the risk by 9.5 times!
Senior researcher Dr. Thomas Buckley writes, "While the absolute risk of any one anger episode triggering a heart attack is low, our data demonstrates that the danger is real and still there." He further comments that the increased risk of heart attack after intense anger or anxiety is "most likely the result of increased heart rate and blood pressure, tightening of blood vessels, and increased clotting, all associated with triggering of heart attacks."

"Fitness Mantra" by Neeraj Mehta

“So much for water” By Neeraj Mehta

Staying hydrated is a must in summer as water forms most of the body weight. Water ensures proper functioning of each internal organ. The body loses water through perspiration, urine, tears and breathing. Dehydration can cause dizziness, light-headedness, reduced concentration, cramps, low energy, and sluggish digestion. During summer, the body tends to lose more water due to heat and humidity.

Apart from drinking water regularly, one can try other steps to prevent dehydration. For one, cut down on high-protein foods and add more carbs. Other ways to stay hydrated in summer include adding fruits and salads to your diet.

Diet: Summer has lots of fruity options, which are also a delicious way of fulfilling the water loss.

Watermelon tops the list in terms of water content (almost 90-95 per cent). It also has nutrients like vitamins, potassium, Lycopene etc. Cantaloupe, commonly known as musk melon, is another rich source of water. Strawberries are high-fibre, low-calorie fruits that help detox the body. They are rich in water and full of antioxidants.

Does your kid need to lose weight?

“Does your kid need to lose weight?” by Fitness Expert Neeraj Mehta

A 2014 report by the WHO also mentioned that children these days are getting fatter and not healthier, which is a matter of concern. ‘A relationship between lack of activity and increases in body fat levels for children is the major concern these days. Even though the importance of exercise and outdoor activities cannot be stressed enough, parents tend to ignore this aspect completely,’ says Neeraj Mehta,

Fitness Expert, Nutritionist and Director of GFFI Fitness Academy.

What can parents do to fight obesity?

‘Parents should take a keen interest in their children’s fitness activities as they would do for their child’s academics,’ says Mehta. If your child is an introvert, who doesn’t enjoy mingling and playing with other kids take an initiative to help engage in activities that he/she can enjoy alone and still be fit. Here are few suggestions by Mehta:

Introduce your child to yoga: Yoga is an excellent way to tone up and be fit; the earlier you start the better. Even in ancient times, students were taught sun salutation or pranayama for its varied benefits.
